RETAINING WALLS

 The retaining walls present a complex problem of inter- action between the wall and back fill and no satisfactory theory has so far been put forth for its analysis. Since the effect of earthquake motion is represented by equivalent seismic coefficients for various structures, the same concept is used in retaining walls also. A slight modification to static methods of analysis, based on wedge theory, is made to take into account the extra equivalent forces due to earthquakes. The formulae given in IS code are summarized below

The pressure P exerted on the wall is given by (as shown in figure above )

C in above equation would have two values and the values and the higher value of C is to taken for
calculating pressure. 

The lower value of C  is to taken for calculating pressure.
